Do you want to play a role in creating the connection between ICT and Biology? Maastricht University is looking for a research software engineer to join our Bioinformatics department (BiGCaT) to maintain, improve and develop open-source bioinformatics software and services.

Job description

We are looking for a research software engineer interested in joining our bioinformatics department. Your main responsibility will be to support our broad range of open-source bioinformatics software, workflows, and services. Our bioinformatics research aims to answer complex biological questions that cannot be answered with basic information sources. Our digital tools basically consist of four types of “devices”: high-quality data analysis and software, supported by modern hardware and operating systems. If these requirements are not met, researchers cannot efficiently solve the problems at hand and your role in the group is to support their work. For this position, you need to have sufficient knowledge of biology and bioinformatics in order to support ongoing development and research, but it also requires being aware of IT security and compliance with GDPR, copyright laws.

Your main tasks will include contributions to maintain and develop existing tools and services (including WikiPathways, PathVisio, BridgeDb, Cytoscape, Chemistry Development Kit), development of novel workflows, share knowledge with colleagues by giving presentations, co-organizing workshops, training courses and similar events, and promote the sustainable use of technologies, such as quality of the eScience aspects within projects, including design, documentation and testing.

Requirements

  • Degree in higher education in computer science/bioinformatics or another relevant field;
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the use of research-oriented digital methodologies and affinity with research;
  • Good knowledge and programming experience in Java, Python, and/or R;
  • Practical knowledge of software engineering;
  • Proven interest and demonstrable affinity for working on open-source projects;
  • English proficiency and open to learn and get involved in the ongoing research at an interdisciplinary and international department.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 12 months.

As a Research software engineer at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, you will be employed by the most international university of the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:

  • Good employment conditions. The position is in grated in scale 9 according to the UFO profile ICTS, function level 3 with corresponding salary ranging from € 3.098,- to € 4.257,- gross per month (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week).
  • In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus are applicable.
  • An employment contract for a period of 12 months with a scope of 0.6 FTE.
  • As a holder of the 'Family-friendly University' quality mark, we offer flexible working hours and the possibility to work partly from home if the nature of your position allows it. You will receive a monthly commuting and internet allowance for this. If you work full-time, you will be entitled to 29 vacation days and 4 additional public holidays per year, namely carnival Monday, carnival Tuesday, Good Friday, and Liberation Day. If you choose to accumulate compensation hours, an additional 12 days will be added. Furthermore, you can personalize your employment conditions through a collective labor agreement (CAO) choice model.

Faculty of Health, Medicine, and Life Sciences

At the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML), everything revolves around healthy living. Our research and education focuses not only on recovery, but also on prevention, health maintenance and health promotion. FHML works closely in education, research and healthcare provision with the Maastricht academic hospital, together with which it forms the Maastricht University Medical Centre (MUMC+).

The largest faculty at Maastricht University, FHML is home to an international community of staff and students. We offer a wide range of Dutch- and English-taught bachelor’s and master’s programmes, using innovative educational concepts and building bridges to practice.

Research at FHML is multidisciplinary and revolves around select, topical themes. The department is involved in (inter)national initiatives to analyse, collect, share and integrate biological data. It uses a range of new methods and tools. These include:

NUTRIM - School of Nutrition and Translational Research in Metabolism

NUTRIM is internationally recognised as Centre of Excellence for research on obesity, diabetes, COPD and cancer cachexia.

NUTRIM has approximately 134 researchers, 256 PhD students and 63 support staff. Our core research programme is organised around integrated multidisciplinary themes in three divisions including 18 clinical and basic sciences departments of Maastricht University Medical Centre+ (MUMC+).

Translational research on lifestyle, ageing and diseases induced metabolic and inflammatory disorders is conducted with a specific focus on nutrition.

NUTRIM aims to contribute to health maintenance and personalised medicine by unraveling lifestyle and disease-induced derangements in metabolism and by developing targeted nutritional, exercise and drug interventions.

This is facilitated by a state of the art research infrastructure and close interaction between scientists, clinicians, master and PhD students.
