SEM is a centre of expertise for Europe-related debate and research. As a programme editor, you design public programmes from A to Z. Within SEM, you will work closely with the communications team and under the leadership of the director and the programme manager to position our programmes as best as possible and create meaningful content. We are a compact and close-knit team where personal initiative is valued and there is always room for new ideas. Together we roll up our sleeves, work hard and celebrate successes.

In recent years, we have managed to realise a large number of popular events. Examples of this are the Conference on the Future of Europe, a series of speeches by Dutch ministers about the government's policy towards Europe, the Princess Beatrix lectures and an event with Italian President Sergio Mattarella. On 29 April 2024, in the run-up to the European Parliament elections, we will organise the third edition of the Maastricht Debate, a major debate with the leading candidates for the European Parliament.

Position, responsibility and assignment

In short, as a programme editor you will do the following:

  • You are ultimately responsible for the development, coordination and production of public events or other activities, such as multimedia projects, related to the scientific translation of European integration from a European, national and local perspective.
  • You write compelling programme descriptions and actively engage in promoting programmes across SEM's diverse online and offline marketing platforms to garner attention.
  • As a born networker, you represent SEM in networks and partnerships and further expand our network with relevant partners.
  • You proactively pursue internal and external opportunities that demonstrably strengthen the institutional profile and image of Maastricht University as the most prominent European university in the Netherlands.
  • You have a nose for news, follow current affairs at home and abroad and look for synergy with related European initiatives within UM, Maastricht, Limburg and the Euregion.
  • You develop programmes in the context of the European Heritage Label, which was awarded by the European Commission to the Maastricht Treaty in 2018 at the initiative of the Province of Limburg and is implemented by Studio Europa.

Job requirements

We are looking for an experienced and creative programme maker. You are a go-getter who likes to work in a team, but also achieves great results on an independent level. You know how to convince your colleagues and other stakeholders of your ideas and are able to forge relationships at all levels within and outside the organisation. With your broad interest in political, social and cultural themes, you are full of new ideas that lead to relevant and appealing public programmes and events.

  • You have demonstrable experience: you have at least 3 years of experience as a programme maker, editor (at a newspaper, current affairs programme or talk show) or as an event producer. Experience or affinity with cultural heritage is an advantage.
  • You have a relevant education: you have a university education in European Studies or a related study. You closely follow political and social developments in the Netherlands and Europe and can oversee their impact on SEM's public programme.
  • You are a storyteller: you intrigue your audiences with your programmes and use various formats, such as lectures, panel discussions, a video series or scrolling story. You write strong and concise programme texts in English that form the basis for the communications team to create content around the programme. Good command of Dutch is an advantage.
  • You achieve impact: by defining clear objectives and mapping relevant target groups and partners, you can increase the impact of our programmes. In addition, you evaluate completed projects together with the team to learn for the future.
