Job Description

Digital technologies are becoming indispensable in the modern research landscape, thus there’s an increasing need for support regarding cloud services and computing that align with Open Science objectives and FAIR principles. In this context, we're launching the Research Computing Infrastructure Support Team, combining the experience of Research Support at the University Library with the expertise of the university's ICT Servicecenter. As the Product Owner for Research Computing Infrastructure, your role will be pivotal in further developing our local cloud computing facilities, i.e. the Data Science Research Infrastructure (DSRI), and also guiding researchers in the use of (inter)national high performance computing facilities. You will lead the creation of a strategic roadmap to position Research Computing Infrastructure support within the organization and manage stakeholder needs to ultimately create bridges so that the end users (academics) can navigate digital infrastructures and manage research software efficiently.

Your work focuses on:


  • As a Product Owner you will work closely with academics, supporting them in navigating the local and (inter)national landscape of High Performance Computing (HPC) solutions and Cloud services for their research projects.
  • Collaborate with external Digital Competence Centers and national Research IT organizations to coordinate resources such as SURF Research Cloud to enhance our services portfolio.
  • Having a user-centric vision: You must be able to translate user needs and requirements into tangible products and services, bearing in mind that academics are transitioning into digital technologies. You must also ensure that our support mechanisms align with legal, academic guidelines and best practices.
  • Stakeholder collaboration: You will be responsible for maintaining regular contact with stakeholders, translating input into product/service features and priorities. You have a sharp organizational sensitivity, and communication skills to coordinate work with the team of engineers, scrum master, community manager, key researchers, national service providers and other teams such as the data stewards.
  • Developing a vision for Research Computing Infrastructure support: You will coordinate the creation of a roadmap that integrates our products and services within the broader Maastricht University research ecosystem. This will ensure long-term support for the evolving needs of the research community in the digital landscape.
  • Agile management and evaluation: You will be instrumental in steering the development of the product (e.g. the DSRI) and the services (e.g. One-on-one support on virtualization technologies). Regularly assessing and evaluating the effectiveness of our offerings.
  • Leadership: In your role as product owner, you are a leader that will actively contribute to the development of the services and products. In your role you provide direction to the team's work, and you are an important point of contact for the team and stakeholders within the organization.

Job Requirements

We are looking for you if you are someone who is good at bridging the gap between user needs and technological solutions. Someone who possesses an understanding of the academic research landscape and the intricacies of IT support. You are good at advising and taking decisions and have a strong organizational sensitivity. You are preferably familiar with the process of scientific research and/or with cloud and scientific computing services.

Furthermore, you have:


  • A master’s degree, preferably in a related field. Such as, IT management, software engineering, information systems, computer science, etc.
  • A good command of the Dutch and English language (level C1) and strong interpersonal skills.
  • A solution-focused mindset, analytical skills and a collaborative spirit.
  • Affinity with Open Science, and the broader Research Computing Infrastructure landscape.
  • Experience with Agile principles and the role that the product owner plays in this is a plus.
  • Proven years of experience working in a similar role or managing complex IT projects. Having worked as PhD or researcher in referred environment is a plus.

What we offer

As Product owner at the University Library?, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:


  • Good employment conditions. The position is graded in scale 11 - 12 according to UFO profile ICT Consultant function level 1 or 2, with corresponding salary based on experience ranging from €4332,00 and €6737,00 gross per month (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
  • An employment contract for a period of 12 months with a scope of 1,0 FTE. Upon proven suitability, the employment contract will be converted to an indefinite contract.
  • At Maastricht University, the well-being of our employees is of utmost importance, we offer flexible working hours and the possibility to work partly from home if the nature of your position allows it. You will receive a monthly commuting and internet allowance for this. If you work full-time, you will be entitled to 29 vacation days and 4 additional public holidays per year, namely carnival Monday, carnival Tuesday, Good Friday, and Liberation Day. If you choose to accumulate compensation hours, an additional 12 days will be added. Furthermore, you can personalize your employment conditions through a collective labor agreement (CAO) choice model.
