The University Library aims to increase the visibility and accessibility of scientific information. Good metadata is crucial in enabling students and researchers to easily find and combine various data. Connecting data through Linked Open Data (LOD) techniques has become increasingly important due to the vast growth of metadata.

Job Description

We offer you the opportunity to develop in the field of metadata with Linked Open Data. You will collaborate with an LOD Specialist and a Data Engineer within Team Collections, guiding metadata specialists in the application of Linked Open Data.

You will be responsible for and further develop in:

  • Exporting and importing metadata from different systems and converting it into the appropriate formats for Linked Open Data.
  • Achieving sustainable accessibility, visibility, and usability of sources and collections by assigning Linked Open Data, including in the digital heritage domain.
  • Exploring functionality and potential applications of new metadata concepts, such as Resource Description & Access (RDA), Bibframe, and Linked Data.
  • Advancing the linked (meta) data expertise level within the University Library (UB) and involving your colleagues.
  • Participating in relevant meetings and networking events to gain and exchange knowledge, both within the UB and at (inter)national levels.

Requirements

Ideally, you possess knowledge (or a willingness to learn) about:

  • Linked data and the semantic web.
  • Relevant metadata formats and exchange standards (such as MARC 21, Dublin Core, Schema.org, RDF, SPARQL and IIIF).
  • Ontologies and vocabularies.
  • Data transformation tools (such as MarcEdit or OpenRefine).
  • Additionally, you have:
  • A bachelor's or master's degree with a focus on Information or Data Management.
  • Affinity with working with metadata in a scientific (library) context.
  • Proficiency in both spoken and written Dutch and English (at least Cambridge level B2).
  • Communication skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team, demonstrating effective and solution-oriented collaboration.

What we offer

As Specialist Metadata at Universiteits Bibliotheek, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:

  • Good employment conditions. The position is classified in pay scale 9 according to UFO profile Specialist Wetenschappelijke Informatie, with a corresponding salary based on experience ranging from €3377,00 to €4640,00 gross per month (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
  • An employment contract for a period of 12 months with a scope of 0,8 FTE. Upon proven suitability, the employment contract will be converted to an indefinite contract.
  • At Maastricht University, the well-being of our employees is of utmost importance, we offer flexible working hours and the possibility to work partly from home if the nature of your position allows it. You will receive a monthly commuting and internet allowance for this. If you work full-time, you will be entitled to 29 vacation days and 4 additional public holidays per year, namely carnival Monday, carnival Tuesday, Good Friday, and Liberation Day. If you choose to accumulate compensation hours, an additional 12 days will be added. Furthermore, you can personalize your employment conditions through a collective labor agreement (CAO) choice model.
