Do you find it interesting to follow the new developments surrounding next-generation metadata, such as Linked (open) Data? Do you see it as a challenge to work as a metadata specialist and take a leading role in this? Then keep reading, because you might be the new colleague we are looking for.

Job description

Metadata, crucial in the here and now.

Good metadata enables scientists to easily find and combine various data. Additionally, it helps libraries increase the visibility and discoverability of their scientific information. Due to the enormous increase in scientific information and the possibilities to connect data, the use of metadata is becoming increasingly important.

Next-generation metadata, the future.

There are various developments happening around next-generation metadata, which will keep challenging you in this role. As a next-generation metadata specialist, you will become an expert in cataloging with Linked (Open) Data (LOD) among other things. You will do this together with the core group Linked Data, which also consists of a Linked Data Specialist and a Data Engineer.

You will guide your metadata colleagues in this process. Together with them, you will ensure the sustainable accessibility, discoverability, and usability of resources and collections, with a particular focus on cataloging according to the new international standards agreed upon by the University Libraries & National Library (UKB) collectively.

You will be involved in:

  • Exploring the functionality and potential applications of new metadata concepts, such as Resource Description & Access (RDA), Bibframe, and Linked Data.
  • Developing proposals for the development of metadata policies within Maastricht University (UM). You will also contribute to the implementation of these policies in the systems of the University Library (UL).
  • Keeping your metadata colleagues, with whom you closely collaborate, informed about developments in the field of next-generation metadata.
  • Providing advice, instruction, and support in the application of RDA and the use of the RDA toolkit.
  • Participating in relevant national meetings, such as the UKB Metadata Expertise Group and the FOBID (branch organization for the Dutch library sector) RDA Committee.
  • Participating in or leading projects related to metadata and Linked (Open) Data.

Requirements

We are looking for you if you understand the context in which metadata is used. You are able to relate the functions and goals of metadata to various types of users with different needs (such as automated processing).

Furthermore, you have:

  • A bachelor’s or master's level of education. Specialisation in Information or Data Management is desirable.
  • Experience as a metadata specialist.
  • Knowledge of metadata in a scientific (library) context and the ability to understand and translate the language, functions, and goals of various types of metadata into applications for UM.
  • Proficiency in both spoken and written Dutch and English.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently as well as in a team, collaborating effectively and solution-oriented.
  • Knowledge of relevant (linked) metadata formats, exchange standards, and platforms (such as MARC 21, Dublin Core, Schema.org, and Wikidata) and (linked) data serialization formats (such as XML, RDF, JSON-LD) is a plus.
  • Affinity with working with ontologies and vocabularies is a plus.
  • Experience with data transformation tools (such as MarcEdit or OpenRefine) and exchange protocols (OAI-PMH) is a plus.
