We are looking for two HPC engineers for the team. We hope to attract one experienced engineer and have a vacancy for one aspiring HPC engineer.

We are looking for two enthusiastic and knowledgeable DevOps Research HPC Engineers who can make a valuable contribution in helping researchers and students use our HPC cluster (DSRI) to their full advantage. The Data Science Research Infrastructure (DSRI) is a distributed and scalable infrastructure to run Data Science experiments at Maastricht University. The DSRI is available to all employees and students.

Job description

  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with the DSRI team, researchers, and students;
  • Maintain and evolve the Kubernetes-based infrastructure to meet planned and emerging needs, including aspects relating to system upgrades, security, and resource monitoring;
  • Onboard and support researchers in using Docker and Kubernetes with their custom projects (usually Python, R or Matlab);
  • Implement solutions to improve the use of the Kubernetes infrastructure for research: distributed computing, workflow frameworks, scheduling, GPUs;
  • Lead and/or participate in user-focused community and training events;
  • Motivated to learn new things, explore new solutions, and work in different environments;
  • Monitoring and troubleshooting infrastructure and performance issues;
  • Contribute to project reporting activities.

Our senior:

  • Will also contribute to overall product vision and further embedding of DSRI within the university.

Required skills

We are looking for a colleague who enjoys working as part of a team and has good both written and verbal communication skills in Dutch and is comfortable when speaking in English with colleagues.

Furthermore, for themediorposition you have:

  • A master’s degree and experience in academic research environments, preferably in the high performance computing or cloud services administration;
  • Proven track record in a DevOps environment;
  • Proficiency with common scripting languages (Python, Bash, PowerShell);
  • Proficiency with Kubernetes and Docker;
  • Familiar with one, or multiple, modern programming languages (python, typescript, golang, rust);
  • Affinity with all three major OS platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux);
  • An enthusiastic fast-learning, prospective IT infrastructure engineer with at least 5 years of work experience.

And for the senior position you have:

  • A master’s degree and experience in academic research environments, preferably in the high performance computing or cloud services administration;
  • Proven track record in a DevOps environment;
  • Proficiency with common scripting languages (Python, Bash, PowerShell);
  • Proficiency with Kubernetes and Docker;
  • Good communication skills, comfortable when speaking in English with colleagues;
  • Familiar with one, or multiple, modern programming languages (python, typescript, golang, rust);
  • Affinity with all three major OS platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux);
  • You enjoy working as part of a team;
  • At least 5 years of work experience in a comparable research IT working environment.

What we offer

As DevOps Research HPC Engineer at ICT Service Centrum, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:

  • Good employment conditions. The position is graded in scale 10 - 11 according to UFO profile ICT Manager, with corresponding salary based on experience ranging from €3226,00 and €5929,00 gross per month (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
  • An employment contract for a period of 12 months with a scope of 1,0 FTE. Upon proven suitability, the employment contract will be converted to an indefinite contract.
  • At Maastricht University, the well-being of our employees is of utmost importance, we offer flexible working hours and the possibility to work partly from home if the nature of your position allows it. You will receive a monthly commuting and internet allowance for this. If you work full-time, you will be entitled to 29 vacation days and 4 additional public holidays per year, namely carnival Monday, carnival Tuesday, Good Friday, and Liberation Day. If you choose to accumulate compensation hours, an additional 12 days will be added. Furthermore, you can personalize your employment conditions through a collective labor agreement (CAO) choice model.
