Are you a talented data engineer with an interest in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence?

We are looking for a talented data engineer to join a growing team of developers in the Institute of Data Science (IDS), a research unit within the Department of Advanced Computing Sciences (DACS). Your technical background should be in Python primarily, with an interest in data science and artificial intelligence."

You will be joining a growing team of developers working on EC funded projects and you will contribute to the development of open-source systems for data management, analysis and querying. A major focus of IDS is the development of open-source systems for data management and data mining, with a focus on data repositories, ontologies and knowledge graphs, and machine/deep learning.

Your primary responsibility will be working on the EC funded projects BioFIN and OpenAgri. BioFIN will develop tools to help redirect mainstream finance towards nature based solutions that ensure the maintenance and restoration of biodiversity. OpenAgri will develop a set of open-source components for the development of digital agricultural solutions for small scale farmers. In both cases, you will be working with partners across Europe in research institutes, universities and SMEs.

We expect you to

  • Work with other developers and data scientists to code proof-of-concept projects and operational systems on large scale data sets.
  • Document design decisions, code, and workflows.
  • Migrate successful proof-of-concept projects into production environments.
  • Extend your skill set with new technologies and consider their applicability to current or future needs.
  • Advise researchers in the preparation and execution of their research data management plans.
  • Collaborate with IT colleagues from IDS and across Europe in international EC funded projects.

IDS offers a highly collaborative, convivial environment with a large portfolio of research projects covering life sciences, health, food, agriculture, law and social sciences where the application of data science techniques can make a significant contribution. Colleagues will include developers, PhD Students, Postdocs and academics all working on a variety of data science research challenges.

Requirements

  • Degree in computer science, or related discipline with strong software engineering components.
  • 3+ years’ experience of IT platform development.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills in English (Dutch is a plus).

Additionally we would like it if you have

  • Past experience of participating in development teams (small ones).
  • Participated in open source projects (reporting bugs, proposing features and ideas and constructive criticism, providing bug-fixes and new implementations).
  • Knowledge of semantic technologies (RDF, OWL, SPARQL, etc).
  • Knowledge of and experience in machine learning/deep learning technologies.
  • Do not be put off applying if you do not have all skills described, the important qualities are enthusiasm and passion for coding and that you can show us code you have written for example on Github or similar. A strong interest in data science and its use for the good of society is also a plus.
  • You are willling to work at least 3 days on site.

What we offer

As Data Science Developer at Faculty of Science & Engineering, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:

  • Good employment conditions. The position is graded in scale 9 according to UFO profile ICT Developer, with corresponding salary based on experience ranging from €3377,00 and €4640,00 gross per month (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
  • An employment contract for a period of 24 months with a scope of 1,0 FTE.
  • At Maastricht University, the well-being of our employees is of utmost importance, we offer flexible working hours and the possibility to work partly from home if the nature of your position allows it. You will receive a monthly commuting and internet allowance for this. If you work full-time, you will be entitled to 29 vacation days and 4 additional public holidays per year, namely carnival Monday, carnival Tuesday, Good Friday, and Liberation Day. If you choose to accumulate compensation hours, an additional 12 days will be added. Furthermore, you can personalize your employment conditions through a collective labor agreement (CAO) choice model.

The Department of Advanced Computing Sciences is Maastricht University’s largest and oldest department broadly covering the fields of artificial intelligence, data science, computer science, mathematics and robotics.
